Description

  • Bernard Boutet de Monvel
  • Sylvie et Champagne
  • Signé en bas à droite BERNARD / B. DE MONVEL
  • Huile sur toile
  • 70 x 64,5 cm ; 27 1/2 by 25 3/8 in

Condition

The painting sits on its original canvas, which would benefit from a slight cleaning. An old tear was restored in the background, by the crucifix ; and another small tear was restored in the lower right, just above the flowers. The matter is thin. The traces of the compass, stylet and pencil are visible on the surface : this is characteristic of the artist's technique. Under UV light, a small retouch is visible in the background, between Sylvie's head and her dog (Champagne). Very good condition overall.

Catalogue Note

The painting represents Sylvie and her dog, Champagne, in the Boutet de Monvel Parisian house, in 1944. A similar composition representing the same scene, but taking place in the Nemours family house, is also presented in the sale (see lot 31).
