Condition

-Good overall condition ; -Original canvas; -Several long thin cracks lower left, upper right and lower right ; several small thin cracks scattered over the surface (some on the vase); -Some pencil strokes are visible under the paint surface, as well as 3 compass circles around 3 flowers; -Paint surface is rather thin in places; it is thicker in the upper part (background); -No repaint visible under UV light; -Picture does not seem to be varnished

Catalogue Note

Ce bouquet de marguerites, d’une élégance particulière, fut peint à Paris vers 1930. Fortement influencé par la rigueur et la délicatesse des fleurs d’Albrecht Dürer, l’œuvre apparaît néanmoins d’une grande modernité par l’absolue frontalité de sa composition. Ainsi, le vase dans la glaçure duquel se reflètent les fenêtres de l’atelier et que l’artiste place sur une base de couleur sombre, évoque-t-il les fleurs de Robert Mapplethorpe. D'autres bouquets de fleurs (lots 53 et 97) sont posés sur la même base de couleur sombre.

On retrouvera des bouquets placés dans ce même vase dans plusieurs compositions de l’artiste, notamment Sylvie et son chien (lots 30 et 128).

The dark line on the lower part of the composition was used by the artist a few years earlier (see lot 53 and 97) to enhance composition's frontality. The attention to details, such as the reflection of the windows from the artist's studio, is characteristic of Boutet de Monvel's style, along with his taste for geometry. Bouquets in the same vase appear in other compositions (see lots 30 and 128).
