Description
- lapis lazuli
of baluster form, the flattened body with a pair of pierced chilong handles flanking the neck, the body carved with broad band of archaistic motifs forming a taotie mask in low relief, the softly polished stone of bright purplish-red colour speckled with gold
Condition
The vase is in very good overall condition. There is an old shallow flake to the exterior of the rim and further insignificant nibbles or nicks along the edge of the mouth and foot, all to be expected and consistent with age. The interior of the foot and the base are lightly ground.The actual colour is somewhat deeper blue and less purple compared to the catalogue photo.

Archaistic vases of this type appear to have been created as part of a three-part altar garniture set, comprised together with an incense burner and circular box; see a set illustrated in Zhongguo yuqi quanji, vol. 6, Shijiazhuang, 1993, pl. 95; another set sold in these rooms, 1st November 1999, lot 923; and a third set sold in our London rooms, 14th May 2008, lot 677.
