finely carved and hollowed in imitation of an archaic bronze vessel, the pear-shaped body resting on a high splayed foot, the neck collared with a band or archaistic motifs in low relief centred with a taiji symbol on each side, the smoothly polished stone of attractive golden brown colour

Condition
The vase is in overall good condition. It is finely carved and well hollowed. There are some light typical nibblings or insignificant nicks along the mouthrim and footring, all consistent with age. There is some natural pitting in the stone. The actual colour is less orange and slightly more pale yellow compared to the catalogue photo.

A vase of similar hu shape and carved with a raised band at the foot, in the British Museum, London, is illustrated in Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jades from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, pl. 29:7; one from the collection of William Hood Dunwoody, is published in Chinese Jades. Archaic and Modern from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, London, 1977, pl. 175; another was sold at Christie’s Rome, 21st May 1974, lot 191; and a fourth vase, but lacking the raised bank at the foot, in the Melvin Gutman collection, is included in Stanley Charles Nott, Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, London, 1936, pl.
