Description

  • porcelain
comprising a bottle vase with a flared mouthrim, the exterior densely decorated with panels enclosing various scenes of ladies and vessels with issuing plants, between friezes of plantain leaves and ruyi lappets, the base with a double-circle mark; an octalobed bowl decorated on the exterior with scenes of scholarly and leisurely pursuits, the interior with a further resting scholar surrounded by a border of scholarly attributes; a dish decorated on the interior with a scholar and a young boy beneath a pine tree, surrounded by a composite floral scroll, the exterior with a chrysanthemum scoll, the base with a double-circle mark; and a larger dish decorated with ladies surrounded by prunus branches, the base with an apocryphal Chenghua mark

Provenance

Acquired in Salisbury, 15th July 2006, lots 648 (bottle),  626 (bowl),  636 (larger dish). Acquired in Dorchester, Dorset, 1st June 2006, lot 457 (the smaller dish).

Condition

Bottle vase: There is a restored chip outside the mouthrim with an associated radiant hairline crack extending onto the interior measuring approx. 3.5 cm. There are some light surface scratches but the vase is otherwise in good condition. Bowl: the rim of the bowl has been slightly polished, possibly to conceal some original fritting, typical of Kangxi period porcelain. Larger dish: there is a minute flake (approx 0.3 cm) under the rim. The dish is otherwise is in good condition. Smaller unillustrated dish: in good condition. The interior is somewhat dry and possibly later in date.
