Catalogue Note

A FINE COPY. The Jesuit Avril set out in 1685 to find an overland route to the Far East, travelling via Cyprus, Syria, Asia Minor and Persia, but was turned back when he reached Astrakhan on the northern shores of the Caspian Sea. He subsequently returned to Constantinople, thence to France via Moldavia and Poland, arriving home in 1690.
