Catalogue Note
The letters of Froes are primary sources for the upheavals of Japanese society in the early 1580s, as the warlord Oda Nobunaga, who showed favour to the Jesuits against the Buddhists, rose to dominant power and then was overthrown and killed in 1582. As supplement there are eight briefer letters from Jesuit missionaries in Macao and China, including Matteo Ricci.
