Catalogue Note
RARE LARGE PAPER COPIES OF THESE TWO WORKS, "engraved by Isidore Stanislas Henri Helman (1743-1806) and drawn by Jean-Denis Attiret (1702-1768)... copied from a set of Chinese miniatures which were sent by the Jesuit missionary Amiot in Peking to Bertin, who was Louis XIV's Minister of Art and the one in charge of France's relations with China. The engravings in the first part illustrate the life and deeds of Confucius. In the second part, they illustrate the memorable achievements of the Chinese emperors" (Western Travellers in China).
