Catalogue Note

“The best account of the Opium War (1839–1842)” (Western Travellers in China).

As attested by a contemporary manuscript account on the fly leaf, this copy was presented by Hall to Tsar Nicholas via their mutual acquaintance Hedwige Lubomirska, a Polish princess. At the outbreak of the Crimean war, the Tsar returned the book to Hall via Princess Lubormirska.
