Catalogue Note
A MAGNIFICENT COPY IN THE STYLE OF A DUODO BINDING. Mendoza's "best-selling" history and description of China was first published in Spanish in 1585 and was quickly translated into other European languages including Italian (see lot 57). "Gonzales' book was apparently the first published Western text to contain Chinese characters" (Western Travellers in China).
