Catalogue Note

A VERY GOOD COPY. "Bouvet was one of six mathematicians sent to China by Louis XIV in 1685 ... the book aimed at obtaining the king's support for the Jesuit mission in China. It describes the life and work of the missionaries at the imperial court in Beijing and portrays the great Kangxi emperor as being very close to converting to Christian faith" (Löwendahl).
