Catalogue Note

A fine, and possibly unique, photographic record of a journey through the Yangtze Gorges in 1906. The superb platinum prints are well-composed and suggest a highly competent, if not, professional photographer. The images include numerous river scenes, junks, rowing boats, stormy weather, villages and towns along the river and local architecture, temples, and life of local people along. There are no images of westerners, apart from a single image with a western man amongst a group of Chinese.

These albums are very similar to ones produced by James A. Sinclair F.R.P.S. (d. 1940), who ran a famous photographic shop on the corner of Trafalgar Square.
