Catalogue Note

Chris van Allsburg (b.1949) is an American artist, illustrator and writer, best known for his Caldecott Award books: Jumanji (1981) and The Polar Express (1985), both of which have been adapted for the silver screen.  It is believed that the portrait of the boy is a self-portrait of the artist when he was young and the girl represents his future wife Lisa.
