Catalogue Note

An original design from one of the finest children’s alphabet books, comprising a marvelous series of images of children of contemporary Russian aristocrats, as well as characters from fairy tales and folk-lore, &c.

Together with a copy of the 1st edition of the published book, Azbuka V Kartinakh (St Petersburg, 1904). With pictorial title and 34 chromolithographed alphabet plates. 4to, [36]pp; original bloth-backed boards (soiled and worn).

Benois was an important painter, critic, and stage designer, who is perhaps best-known for collaborating with Stravinsky by creating the costumes and sets for Diaghilev’s production of Petrouchka (1911).
