Catalogue Note

A lovely Pre-Raphaelite image by this important Victorian artist, more painterly in style than her well-known children’s book illustrations.

A label affixed to the back of the frame indicates that on the backboard there is the faintly discernible signature of the artist’s brother “John Greenaway”, as well as identification of the three girls as “Susan” “Mary” and “Emily” (Mary being one of the artist’s favorite models, whom Ruskin had something of a crush on as well).
