Catalogue Note

Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1822–1888) was amongst the earliest American painters who primarily worked as an illustrator during the middle 19th century, designing images for texts by James Fennimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, Mary Mapes Dodge, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Washington Irving.  His timeline is slightly earlier than Winslow Homer and Thomas Nast.
