Provenance

The Artist, from whom directly acquired by David Bowie, Johannesburg, 1995

Exhibited

Johannesburg, Electric Workshop, Je sais d'où je vien (I know where I come from), Africus, 1st Johannesburg Biennale, 28th February - 30th April 1995.

Condition

The work exhibits various surface marks and dirt throughout. The metal 'face' and tin 'mouth' exhibit some rusting, and the scrubbing brush 'hair' exhibits considerable wear to the bristles and cracking to the wooden handle. There is a break to the the jerrycan 'nose' that the artist has bound together with wire. These features all appear to be original to the work and in keeping with its nature as an assemblage of found objects.
