Barbara Morgan was born in Buffalo, Kansas in 1900 and eventually used a camera as a means to document her travels in the Southwest. Impressed by the Navajo and Pueblo Indians’ dance rituals, she went to see performance by Martha Graham Dance Company which subsequently inspired her first photography book Martha Graham: Sixteen Dances in Photographs. The present photograph hails from this series which documented more than 40 dancers and choreographers.
