Catalogue Note

Halfway  between Calder’s ‘Mobiles’ and Tinguely’s ‘Machines’, Rickey’s elegant and balanced sculptures focus upon movement rather than materials. External elements such as wind create a smooth and hypnotic movement, which lead the viewer into a contemplative state.  Rickey was  born in the United States in 1907 and moved at an early age to Paris where he was influenced by the modernist movement. During the second World War Rickey served as an engineer and became familiar with mechanics and construction. After the war  he swiftly attained international recognition  for his stainless-steel sculptures, characerised by their - longspear-ike rotating arms.
