Catalogue Note

The fourth Great Bible (November 1540) and the third with Cranmer's prologue. The colophon, according to Herbert, gives the date of November 1540, but the publication apparently was delayed, as the title-page bears the date 1541, and is the same as that used for the Great Bible of November 1541. The woodcut above the title for Part 3 whimsically depicts a fool riding a hobby horse.

"Though this edition claims to be "oversene and perused  by Bishops Tunstall (1474–1559) and Heath (?1501–1578), the text show no sign of careful revision; indeed in many parts it approximates more closely to that of 1539 than to that of April of July 1540. This and the Nov. 1541 edition, though printed in the same style as the five other Great Bibles, have a slightly longer page, which contains 65, instead of 62 lines in a full column" (Herbert).

However, in this copy, the line count for the New Testament is 62 lines to the full column instead of 65, with the following collation: Aa–Ll8 Mm6 Nn8. Therefore, this portion of the text was most likely made up from various issues of the Great Bible 1539–41.
