Catalogue Note

Third edition, with additions, of one of the most popular and influential works in English literature. In the introduction to his Oxford University Press edition of Bunyan's celebrated allegory, J. B. Wharey notes that"The third edition enjoys the distinction of being virtually the first complete edition of the Pilgrim's Progress. It was the first to insert the long discourse between Mr. By-ends and his companions and their subsequent talk with Christian and Hopeful—the last addition of any consequence Bunyan made to the text." The third edition was the first to include the famous frontispiece, here in the second state with the city labelled "Destruction." This is the issue of the text with the advertisement at the foot of N6r (no priority). All early editions are very rare.
