Roman and italic type, text in 2 columns with marginal notes, title-page with large woodcut printer's device of a man sowing and Tornesius' motto and anagram "son art en Dieu," titles to the Apocrypha and New Testament within ornamental borders, Apocryphal books not noted in table of contents; some very light browning. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over beveled wooden boards, later paper label on spine, edges stained black; clasps broken, wear and soiling.

Catalogue Note
First edition of the Diodati bible, the first Protestant Italian Bible. Giovanni Diodati (1576–1649) was a talented linguist whose parents had fled religious persecution in Italy and fled to Switzerland. As a young man he studied Greek and Hebrew at the Genevan Academy founded by Calvin. At the age of 21, he was invited by Theodore de Bèze to join the Hebrew faculty of the Academy. In addition to the present Italian translation, he also translated the Bible into French (1644). Deodati's Italian Bible is important as version done by a Protestant for Protestants, specifically Calvinists. His Italian is celebrate for elegance and clarity.
