Engraved frontispiece and 4 engravings of the Evangelists by Gerard Vandergucht after Piquet and Michel van Lochom, title-page in red and black, roman type, single column text, annotations in double columns ; moderate to strong browning throughout, especially in quires 7F–8B, lacks final blank. Nineteenth-century stiff vellum, double-ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, red lettering piece, edges stained red.

Catalogue Note

The fifth edition, and the first folio edition of the Rheims New Testament. No edition of the Rheims New Testament of 1582 had appeared since 1633 (see lot 101). "Printed ... perhaps at Douay but [Henry] Cotton says 'most probably in London'" (Herbert).
