Condition
Overall excellent original condition. When viewed in person the patina presents slightly less yellow than in the catalogue illustration. The bronze surfaces with some light surface scratches and minor rubbing, consistent with age and gentle handling. The proper right upper portion with a few minute white surface stains. With original white suspension cord and an additional black cord. A dynamic and iconic form by the artist with great provenance.

Catalogue Note
The present lot is accompanied by certificates of authenticity from Val Bertoia and the Harry Bertoia Foundation.
Edward Flanagan began working in Bertoia’s studio shortly after graduating from high school. He worked there alongside his brother, James, and he spent seventeen cherished years assisting Bertoia, learning as much from the artist about life and art as he did about metalworking. Each year for his holiday bonus, Bertoia gave Flanagan a sculpture of his choosing. The present gong with textured hammer marks was one of these gifts, retained by Flanagan in his home for decades, as was the hanging willow prototype (lot 27).
