Condition
Natural veining to the alabaster with some minor deteriation in several places consistent with the material. A few minor losses to the curls of the hair.
Left putto: Both sculptures carved in the round. Minor damage around the joint between candelabre and putto. Minor chip to the small toe on his proper right foot.
Various minor chips and abrasions to the jolds of the drapery and the edges of the bases.

Catalogue Note
L’iconographie d’obédience italienne du putto ou de l’ange portant un candélabre présente ici des caractéristiques stylistiques plus nordiques. La physionomie potelée des putti, aux larges mains et pieds, ainsi que l’emploi de l’albâtre bien plus fréquent dans les foyers nordiques tels que Malines, indiquent une origine flamande ou du nord de la France. Jacques de Broeucq (1505-1584), sculpteur probablement originaire du nord de la France et actif en Flandres après avoir été initié en Italie aux principes de la Renaissance, représente parfaitement cette génération d’artistes des Pays-Bas méridionaux, à la croisée des influences. Principalement actif à Mons, dont la collégiale de Sainte-Waudru est l’une de ses œuvres emblématiques, il travaillera également à Saint-Omer, Anvers, Luxembourg et Thionville ou encore à Bruxelles, au service de Charles Quint. Son allégorie de la Charité, l’une des vertus théologales réalisées pour le jubé de la collégiale de Sainte-Waudru, vers 1543-1544, présente deux putti stylistiquement proches, de quelques décennies antérieures aux nôtres.
