Condition

The illustration of the catalogue is accurate despite a little too bright. Good overall condition despite the inevitable scratches and marks due to age, use and handling. A few minor wear to the patina of the bronze. The gilding is slightly tarnished. Nice model.

Catalogue Note

La forme de cette paire de vase reprend à l'identique celle d'une paire de vases en porphyre vert "d'après l'antique" ayant appartenu au duc D'aumont et dont la collection fut dispersée à Paris en 1782 ; le dessin reproduit ci-dessous figurait dans le catalogue de la vente.

Outre la forme résolument "à l'antique", le traitement de la matière en mat évoque la pierre de lave qui inspirera la manufacture anglaise de Wedgwood, cette paire de vases témoigne de l'engouement pour la période antique à la fin du XVIIIIe siècle.
