réalisé en deux parties, la figure du dieu de la Longévité Shoulao barbu et souriant, vêtu d'une longue robe flottante et tenant un sceptre dans sa main gauche ainsi qu'un rouleau dans la main droite, chevauchant un cerf à la tête baissée surmontée de hauts bois, ceux-ci réalisés séparément

The deer The bronze is heavily cast in 8 visible parts. The rear left leg is broken in the lower part of the leg and was reattached, in addition there is a visible joint to the upper part of the leg with a pin attached through it. The bronze is patinated to a rich tone with overall light traces of wear to the surface and some very light patches of oxidation. A dent/bruise measuring ca.3 x 2 cm is visible in the middle of the left rear flank. There are several visible casting flaws, the two largest on the back of the neck measuring ca. 2 x 2.5 cm and 4 x 5 cm. Both horns are removable due to the missing rivets. The Shoulao figure The are several small firing flaws visible at the of the neck, one ca. 4 cm, a second behind the right ear ca. 2cm, and another one inside the ear measuring ca. 1,5 cm.

Ce bronze se distingue par son importante taille et par sa finesse d’exécution qui le rendent particulièrement rare. Shouxing (appelé aussi Shoulao) est le dieu de la Longévité et il est ici représenté d’une manière traditionnelle en vieillard avec un crâne chauve proéminent et chevauchant un cerf blanc. Ce dieu décide de l’instant de la mort de chaque homme, qu’il retranscrit sur un rouleau ici représenté. Il fait partie des sept dieux du Bonheur - l’Amour, l’Honneur, les Talents, la Richesse, la Nourriture, le Contentement et la Longévité - dont tout Chinois ou Japonais se doit d’avoir une représentation chez lui pour lui porter fortune et bonne santé.

Notre bronze peut être rapproché de quelques autres pièces d’exceptions conservées dans les plus importants musées mondiaux: le groupe de Laozi chevauchant un buffle dans les collections du Victoria and Albert Museum de Londres, un groupe similaire mais de plus petite taille représentant Shoulao sur son cerf du musée Cernuschi, et enfin un autre groupe de Shoulao acheté par Auguste Rodin en 1911 et conservé aujourd’hui au musée Rodin.

L’extrême stylisation de ces bronze chinois fut particulièrement admirée par de grands artistes du début du XXe siècle comme François Pompon.
