Kang Myung Sun

Born in 1974 in Seoul, Kang Myung Sun is one of few female furniture designers working in a field still largely dominated by men. Having graduated in 2007 with a BFA and an MFA in Woodworking and Furniture Design from the Hongik University in Korea, Kang continued her academic work until 2010 when she obtained a PhD in Space Design from her alma mater.

It was during her academic pursuits when she discovered mother-of-pearl and lacquer – two traditional elements of Korean decorative furniture-making – the use of which she has become internationally recognized for. She spent years experimenting with these materials and techniques before producing her widely recognizable, sculptural furniture pieces inlaid with mother-of-pearl contrasting with black or orange-red lacquered elements. She has not only revived and modernized the mother-of-pearl inlaying technique but also brought the artisanal 2000-year-old Nacre lacquer craft back to fame. Kang’s designs are often inspired by organic, natural structures that also make a reference to her material. Curvilinear, flowing forms of her tables, sofas or lighting also highlight the iridescent quality of the mother-of-pearl, thus helping to produce exquisite conceptual design pieces that straddle the realm of sculpture and furniture.

Kang Myung Sun’s work has been exhibited in Korea and the US. She has also been an active participant of many design fairs and has showcased her pieces in the US, Middle East, and Europe.
