Catalogue Note
The purpose of these large trays would have been to hold copious amounts of dishes to be used on special occasions such as wedding banquets. Similar trays can be seen depicted on contemporary Qajar laquerwork (see Khalili et al 1997, pp.44-5 & pp.154-7, nos.367 & 368), as well as on two oil paintings of still-lives featuring large trays with similarly shaped feet and containing mountains of delicacies (see Diba and Ekhtiar 1998, pp.214-6, nos.64 a,b).
