the deep circular bowl with everted rim, on a tall foot, chiselled and engraved with a band of animals in chase and hunting, including lions, gazelles, hares, leopards, deer, elephants and fish amidst a swirling floral ground, inscriptive band above and floral motifs below

Provenance

Ex-collection Simon Digby (1932-2010).

A renowned scholar, historian, linguist and collector, Digby spent his life researching and travelling, leaving behind him an important legacy of scholarship in the field of Islamic and Indian art. He was appointed honorary librarian of the Royal Asiatic Society from 1969-85, and accepted the position of assistant keeper in the Department of Eastern Art at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, in 1972, whilst also working on his personal projects and publications, notably on translation.

Condition

In overall good condition, some rubbing resulting in exposed copper in certain areas, scratches, vestiges of black compound highlights in background, the interior with some scratches, interior of foot with oxidisation and encrustation, as viewed.
