Catalogue Note

The scene depicted in this Ottoman illustrated leaf is that of Ubaydallah Ibn Ziyad going to Kufa to have Muslim Ibn Akil killed. Inside the city, the people of Kufa are forced to forswear allegiance to Husayn. This same scene is illustrated in manuscripts of the same work, including a copy in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art, Istanbul, T1958 (f.16a) and the British Library Or.7238 (f.15a) (Norah Titley, Miniatures from Turkish Manuscripts in the British Library, p.56, no.44).
