Description

  • ink on paper, bound leather
Arabic manuscript on polished paper, 29 leaves, 9 lines to the page, written in black naskh script, verses separated by pointed gold florets, illuminated marginal devices marking fifth and tenth verses, 3 surah headings in thuluth script within illuminated panels outlined in blue, f.1a with large headpiece with juz number in white thuluth script, dedication to Sultan Barquq beneath, contemporary tooled morocco binding with gold-punched decoration

Condition

In reasonably good overall condition, various stains, smudges, marginal paper repairs, thumbed, one side of binding more worn, spine repaired, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

The inscription on f.1a states that the Qur’an was endowed by Sultan al-Malik al-Nasir Faraj Ibn Barquq Sayf al-Din, Nasir al-Din (reigned for two short periods: 1399-1405 and 1405-07). A further juz (XIV) from the same Qur'an was sold in these rooms, 9 April 2014, lot 20.
