The box and cover are finely and deeply carved, both parts quite heavy. The box: there are several minorl losses to the raised parts of the flower petals and leaves, the largest a ca. 0.8 x 0.3 cm on one of the petals of the central peony. There are also scattered losses to the outer and inner rims. There is a ca. 1cm wide area of loss to the rim of the box. The inside rim has been repainted at a later date. The raised parts of the center of the design are worn/slightly polished. There is an old inventory label stuck on the six-character mark. The cover: there are several small losses to the design, the largest a ca. 1 x 0.3 cm on the rim. The rim has been repainted. There are tiny losses to the black lacquer between the lines of the four-character mark. There are minute losses to the raised parts of the carved design. The cover is slightly dirtier than the box.
