Catalogue Note

Etroitement apparentée à l'œuvre entrée dans les collections du British Museum en 1932 (inv n° AF1932,0516.32), cette poupée Tiv est l’un des rares témoins de ce corpus mystérieux. Très certainement associées aux pratiques funéraires, ces œuvres serviraient de substituts aux ancêtres.

Les Tiv tiennent probablement leur art du cuir des Hausa, qu’ils croisèrent lors de leur migration au nord de la Benoué. Lui conférant sa beauté intrigante, les multiples motifs polychromes s'inspirent des scarifications des habitants de la région (Kasfir, “Idoma art and the intersection of benue histories and geographies”, Central Nigeria Unmasked : Arts of the Benue River Valley, 2011, p.56-57).
