Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture with deep erosion to the face and around the mouth, to both cheeks and the top of the mask. The rear edges are eroded with some partial lack of material where stood the hanging holes. The patina alternates relatively thick earthy parts and brighter parts particularly on the nose and lips.

Catalogue Note

Ce masque figura dans l'audacieuse exposition Guéré-Wobé-Bété organisée en 1978 par Hélène Kamer. En conclusion du catalogue, elle y soulignait : « Même si l’on ne partage pas les croyances des Guérés Bétés Wobés qui voient dans le masque le réceptacle de l’énergie vitale de ses générations de porteur, l’on peut apprécier les nouvelles réponses dynamiques, même et jusque dans leur côte délirant » (Kamer, Guéré-Wobé-Bété, 1978, p. 7).

L'exubérance des traits - front protubérant, yeux tubulaires, nez et bouche démesurés - illustrent cette esthétique singulière qui participa à la rupture opérée par les artistes du début du XXe siècle avec le naturalisme du siècle précédent. Sa patine croûteuse, la charge sommitale et les fers ponctuant le visage rappellent les puissants pouvoirs autrefois conférés à ce masque d'une très grande ancienneté.
