Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Old patinated lacks of material to the front left hand side of the headdress and another one to the proper righ ear which is visible in the catalogue illustration. Tiny scratches throughout. Exceptionnal old warm tones nuanced patina with darker shades to the rear. Handwritten inventory number to the eadge of the rear : HC 486

Catalogue Note

Apanage des membres de la famille royale et des notables, les coupes à vin de palme céphalomorphes illustrent la quintessence de l’art Kuba. Portant à son paroxysme l’idéal de beauté en pays Kuba, l’artiste a magnifié l’équilibre des traits par la délicatesse des motifs ornementaux et la finesse des modelés. La tête au port altier est mise en valeur par le pied somptueusement décoré de motifs géométriques s'étirant jusqu'à la nuque.

Elle s’apparente étroitement à la coupe publiée en 1921 par Carl Einstein dans Afrikanische Plastik (Sotheby’s, Paris, 3 décembre 2009, n° 94).
