Catalogue Note

Les premiers explorateurs furent frappés par l’extravagance des coiffes en plumes arborées par les hommes Zulu lors de danses cérémonielles.

Les plumes de sakabuli, espèce rare et sauvage particulièrement difficile à capturer, étaient liées aux notions de pouvoir et de majesté. Leur abondance sur cette coiffe signifie le rang élevé de son possesseur : son élaboration nécessitait pas moins de quarante oiseaux - une profusion que seul le fastueux royaume Zulu pouvait se permettre (Shalkwyk, Laband et Bhekinkosi Ntuli, Zulu treasures : of kings & commoners : a celebration of the material culture of the Zulu people, 1996, p.201).
