Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. The pearls are very well preserved onthe outside of all 4 bracelets with only a few small gaps in places on 2 of them. The insides show only tiny wearness to the fabric.

Ces quatre bracelets d'une rare ancienneté illustrent le talent des femmes Ndebele pour mêler couleurs et motifs abstraits. S’inspirant de l’alphabet roman, certaines lettres furent adoptées pour leurs qualités géométriques et utilisées indifféremment à l’envers ou à l’endroit : on relève ici les lettres « M » et « N », évoquant peut-être le nom du peuple Ndebele, fidèlement à la volonté d'affirmer de leur identité.
