Condition

Good condition overall. Carving very well preserved with thick layered polychromy in red and white pigments. Some old thin cracks running on the proper left side of the board. On the reverse of the figure some small drill holes.

« Les planches gope occupent une place unique dans le monde des arts premiers […] car elles autorisent à leurs artistes un vaste champ d’expression avec très peu de limitations. De surcroît […], elles dépeignent des images et des motifs abstraits qui ne reproduisent pas des phénomènes ou des formes naturelles, mais des représentations nées de l’imagination des artistes, issues de leurs rêves ou des récits claniques » (Webb, Esprits incarnés. Photographiée in situ (village de Gibi) en 1961, cette planche gope fascine par la dynamique des images, s'affirmant dans le graphisme du visage central en léger relief et celui de la petite figure qui en orne le tenon. Son impact visuel est accentué par les motifs géométriques encadrant le visage, et par l'intensité de la polychromie. Demeure temporaire de l’être-esprit représenté, elle illustre avec force la créativité des artistes du golfe de Papouasie dans l'interprétation matérielle et immatérielle de leurs croyances.
