Catalogue Note

Original testaments to the history of Maori art, the patu are - above and beyond their use as hand-wielded weapons - prestigious insignia that were handed down from generation to generation. In its beautiful classicism, the one at hand stands out for the great refinement of its champlevé spiral decor - inspired by tree ferns. This decor, emphasized by the nuances of the patina, dovetails elegantly within the vertical bearing of the work, a stylized evocation of a vegetal form.
