Condition

Very condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Crack between the two hands. A loss to the sex and to the left thigh. Thick layered patina with varying tones. Small wear to the base.

Catalogue Note

Le personnage adopte la pose caractéristique de la statuaire Tellem : debout, le corps droit, les bras levés vers le ciel. La tension exprimée par l’attitude est accentuée par les formes linéaires, les volumes anguleux résumés à l’essentiel et la sobriété de l’ornementation. Les détails de cette statue d'autel disparaissent sous la patine croûteuse, brun nuancé - faite de sang sacrificiel et de bouillie de mil - pétrifiée par le temps.

Par "Tellem" - "nous les avons trouvés" - les Dogon désignent les hommes qui habitaient les falaises de Bandiagara avant qu'ils ne peuplent à leur tour le site, à partir du XVe siècle (Hélène Leloup, Dogon, 1994, p. 144-146). Leurs statues, également désignées sous le terme de "Tellem", seraient liées, selon la tradition Dogon, aux rites climatiques, leurs bras levés vers le ciel étant interprétés comme un appel à Dieu afin qu'il envoie la pluie.
