Acquis dans les années 1930 par René Mariana, professeur de sculpture à l'école Boulle (Paris), cette œuvre illustre le rare et majestueux corpus des anciens masques kpan

Le masque kpan symbolise, selon Susan Vogel, la hiérarchie de la société Baulé selon laquelle le pouvoir des femmes est suprême (L'art Baulé. Du visible et de l'invisible, 1999, p. 172). Son esthétique célèbre une image idéale, « qui obéit aux canons de la beauté humaine chez les Baulé, sur le plan esthétique et moral » (Boyer, Baule, 2008, p. 70). Sublimée par la patine sombre, la majesté du visage naît de l'intériorité de l'expression et de l'équilibre parfait des lignes, accentué par le pourtour dentelé s'achevant en tenon. S'ajoute le grand raffinement de la parure : coiffure sophistiquée agencée en plusieurs « coques » et délicates scarifications ponctuées sur le front par des ornements métalliques. 

Ce masque intervenait dans la danse du Goli, lors de fêtes de divertissement ou des funérailles d'un personnage important. Le kpan, considéré comme un masque féminin adulte, y apparaissait en dernier, acclamé par la population. La large collerette qui l'agrémentait autrefois servait à supporter le lourd costume de raphia et de peaux, dont une de léopard, symbole de royauté et de pouvoir (idem, p. 180). Le corpus des masques kpan demeure l'un des plus rares de l'art Baulé et celui-ci compte parmi les premiers entrés dans une collection européenne.

Acquired in 1930 by René Mariana, a professor of sculpture at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, this mask is a specimen of the rare and majestic body of ancient kpan masks. 

According to Susan Vogel, the kpan mask symbolizes hierarchy in Baule society, where women's power reigns supreme (L'art Baulé. Du visible et de l'invisible, 1999, p. 172). Its aesthetics celebrate an ideal image, "which follows the canons of human beauty among the Baule, both from an aesthetic and a moral point of view" (Boyer, Baule, 2008, p. 70). Enhanced by the dark patina, the majesty of the face comes from the interiority of its expression and the perfect balance of the outlines, emphasized by the serrated edges ending in a tenon. The elegance of the headdress: a sophisticated coiffure arranged in several "lobes" and a delicate scarification pattern punctuated, on the forehead, with metal ornaments is exceptional. 

This mask was worn as part of the Goli dance during entertainment celebrations or for the funeral of an important person. The kpan, considered an adult female mask, appeared last, acclaimed by the people. The wide collar that once came with it was used to support the heavy costumes made from raffia and hides, including a leopard skin, a symbol of royalty and power (ibid, p. 180). The kpan mask corpus remains one of the rarest within Baule art, and this mask was among the first to enter into a European collection.
