Le corps et les traits résumés à l'essentiel afin d'amplifier l'impact de la tête impérieuse, cette figurine illustre magistralement les bitungwa, objets sacrés d'initiation, « choses chargées de sens, qui ‘créent des liens’ » et unissent, au sein du Bwami, les individus, les entités claniques et lignagères, à la fois entre eux et avec leurs prédécesseurs défunts (Biebuyck, La sculpture des Lega, 1994, p. 37).
Acquise avant 1930 dans le territoire de Shabunda (nord du pays Lega), cette œuvre s'inscrit dans l'étroit corpus des premiers objets Lega dont l'origine géographique est précisée. Ajoutées à la beauté épurée de sa stylisation, sa patine sombre et sa surface vierge de toute ornementation accentuent la modernité saisissante de cet archaïque statuette, propriété exclusive et individuelle des lutumbo lwa kindi - initiés les plus hauts gradés de l'association du Bwami.
