Catalogue Note

Explaining Emilio Isgrò and his art is extremely complicated, somehow nearly impossible. He is definitively an unusual artist, who nullifies the contents he paints. He is also an uncommon poet, who deletes the words he writes. His art is paradox, which shouts out in silence and leaves the spectator free to build his/her own image from an absence. Specifically absence –in Emilio Isgrò’s art- is the certainty of a presence.
Alma (a destra) ricama nel rosso vestita di rosso is one of the masterpieces from Storie Rosse series, produced in the 70’s by Emilio Isgrò, indeed considered as one of the fathers of Italian Conceptual Art and Visual Poetry. Dated 1975, this piece of art – romantic and radically conceptual – is the emblem of art perceiving the failure of modern times and moving on to “the next”, to Post-Modernism, to the uncertainties of individual experience.
His art totally reflects the ongoing historical era, i.e. the postwar period and the atrocious stalemate of the Cold War, in which the Man – and above all the Artist – achieves full awareness, thanks to his sensitivity, of the relativity of history and of the impossibility to believe in universal principles which presume to be capable of explaining history itself. Within this frame, the Storie Rosse series nullifies the inborn certainty of images and gives the spectator nothing but a footprint, a simulacrum, the glimmer of unrelentingly evolving history.
In “cancellature” (during the 60’s) Emilio Igrò had deleted words from the pages of books and encyclopedias to highlight the power of presence due to absence, the strength and the expressivity of what survives, similar to how touching and radical memories can be when they emerge again. In the same manner, with Storie Rosse Emilio Isgrò leaves the rousing imprint of color to describe his intimate memories of Alma embroidering, but in doing so he lets the spectator build his own image of what he has actually not experienced, as if by magic.
Thanks to Emilio Isgrò, his words without coordinates and his non-images manage to tell stories that the spectator has not lived but perceives to have lived, as a paradox. Tommaso Trini once said: “The fact that Isgrò is showing me nothing because it represents nothing is the measure of his profound awareness that modernity has abandoned the universe of representativeness by leaving only semblances behind, and that the primacy of figurative art definitively needs to be knocked over”.
hronologically placed between the first two participations of Emilio Isgrò into the Biennale of Venezia (1972 and 1978), Alma (a destra) che ricama nel rosso vestito di rosso is one of the most moving and mature works of the production by the poet-artist.
