  • An Attic Red-figured Nolan Amphora

  • Height 13 1/2 in. 34.3 cm.
with disk foot, centrally ribbed handles, and echinus mouth, one side painted with Theseus slaying the Minotaur, the young hero wielding his sword, grasping the Minotaur by one horn, and wearing high sandals and a chlamys fastened at the right shoulder, a band of meander and saltire squares below, the other side with a draped youth advancing to left, a meander band below; accession no. 09.11, old inventory no. 246

Condition

Excellent and intact. Some wear and a few small nicks on the perimeter of the rim, a few small nicks to the glaze on the handles, a few tiny nicks to the glaze on the body, some very minor misfiring in areas, there is a ring-shaped abrasion on and above the forehead of the Minotaur, perhaps a flaw caused during firing. Penned numbers and labels under the foot, as well as some wax around the edge.
