Catalogue Note
The present lot was made by a member of the Lewis Family of Boston, Massachusetts and Saint Louis, Missouri, who was related to Henry Lewis (1819-1904), the great painter of Mississippi River steamboat panoramas.
A constellation of white stars surrounding a slightly larger center star has been appliquéd on a blue, square reserve at the center of a broad field of red and white stripes, all surrounded by a narrow border of stylized golden eagles. Hope of Our County in red on a white stripe, The Star of Freedom at the center, as well as initials of the maker and her charge to the person to whom the quilt was presented M.W.L. to C.M.L.
