Catalogue Note

As Nancy Jo Fox states in her book Liberties with Liberty: The Fascinating History of America's Proudest Symbol, "The desire to use her image continues as a way to express love of freedom and country cherished in small town, U.S.A."

The Statue of Liberty was declared a national monument by President Calvin Coolidge on October 15, 1924, an event which may have inspired the carver to create this piece soon thereafter in 1925.
