Catalogue Note

The bas-relief depicted in the present work was commissioned by King Henri IV in 1597. Mathieu Jacquet carved the mounted king in the monumental fireplace mantel at the Château de Fontainebleau. The fireplace was dismantled in 1725, when Louis XV transformed the room into a theater gallery. It was kept in storage for a century until King Louis Philippe I re-installed it at Fontainebleau.
