Condition

Bronze, verdigris patina on a 4 1/2 inch black stone base. In generally good condition aside from rubbing, scattered pitting, an uneven patina, surface dust, and a few small holes to the underside of the mare and the foal.

Accompanying this lot is a copy of a letter sent from the artist to the present owner, dated June 1st, 1949, discussing his gift of this work to him.

This model of a Percheron mare with foal is part of a larger series by Herbert Haseltine of twenty "British Champion Animals," including other horses, sheep, cattle and pigs. The mare, Messaline, depicted in the present work, won a number of prizes at agricultural shows between 1917 and 1922.
