Catalogue Note
The subject of this sculpture, Mumtaz Mahal, was a British thoroughbred nicknamed "The Flying Filly" for her blazing speed on the track. She is considered one of the most important broodmares of the 20th Century and was named for empress Mumtaz Mahal, wife of the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, of Taj Mahal fame.
